Anthony of Padua
Saint, Franciscan friar, patron of the poor and lost things, theological scholar
Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, Portugal, was a Franciscan friar and one of the most celebrated saints in the Catholic Church. Initially a monk in the Canons Regular, he joined the Franciscan order in 1221 and quickly gained renown for his exceptional preaching ability and theological knowledge. He became known as the 'Hammer of Heretics' for his powerful arguments against heretical movements, particularly the Cathari. Despite his intellectual prowess, Anthony was deeply committed to serving the poor and marginalized, living out the Franciscan ideals of poverty and simplicity. He taught theology at various Franciscan schools and was appointed provincial minister of Northern Italy. Known for his mystical experiences and reported miracles, Anthony became beloved throughout medieval Europe. His final years were marked by illness and retreat to contemplative life, and he died in Padua, Italy, at age 36. He was canonized just one year after his death, one of the fastest canonizations in Church history. Today, he remains the patron saint of lost things, travelers, and the poor. His feast day, June 13, is celebrated worldwide. Anthony of Padua represents the intellectual, spiritual, and compassionate dimensions of medieval Christianity.
