Angela Davis
Civil rights activist, scholar, prison abolition advocate
Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944) is an American political activist, scholar, and author who became one of the most influential voices in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements of the 1960s and beyond. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, during the height of Jim Crow segregation, Davis was exposed to racial injustice from childhood and developed a commitment to fighting systemic oppression. She pursued higher education at Brandeis University and later studied in West Germany under philosopher Herbert Marcuse, returning to the United States as a teaching assistant at UCLA. In 1970, Davis became the target of a nationwide manhunt after firearms registered in her name were used in a courtroom shooting in Marin County, California. Arrested in New York and tried for murder, conspiracy, and kidnapping, she was acquitted in 1972 after a highly publicized trial that became a cause célèbre for the left and a lightning rod for conservative critics. After her release, Davis continued her activism and scholarship, focusing on the prison-industrial complex, police violence, and intersectional feminism. She became a professor and prolific author whose books on abolition democracy, feminism, and racial justice have influenced generations of activists and scholars, making her essential to understanding American political thought.
