Andrei Sakharov

Nobel Peace Prize winner, nuclear physicist, human rights dissident

Biography

Andrei Dmitriyevich Sakharov (May 21, 1921 – December 14, 1989) was a Soviet nuclear physicist, dissident, and human rights activist who became one of the most important moral figures of the 20th century. Initially, Sakharov contributed significantly to Soviet nuclear weapons development, but by the 1960s, he began questioning the moral implications of nuclear warfare and weapons proliferation. His transformation into a dissident was marked by his famous 1968 essay 'Progress, Coexistence, and Intellectual Freedom,' which called for nuclear disarmament and criticized Soviet authoritarianism. For his principled stands, Sakharov faced severe persecution, including internal exile in the closed city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) from 1980 to 1986. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, though Soviet authorities prevented him from attending the ceremony. Sakharov's unwavering commitment to human rights, freedom of conscience, and peace, despite personal suffering and government suppression, established him as a symbol of moral courage during the Cold War. His legacy influenced global human rights discourse and inspired countless activists; the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, established in 1988, continues to honor human rights defenders worldwide.
