Amy Coney Barrett
Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, constitutional originalist legal scholar
Amy Coney Barrett was born on January 28, 1972, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and became the 115th Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when sworn in on June 30, 2022. Before her appointment, she served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where she built a reputation for scholarly opinions and a textualist approach to constitutional interpretation. A graduate of Notre Dame Law School, Barrett worked as a law professor and clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia, whose judicial philosophy of originalism significantly influenced her legal thinking. Her Supreme Court appointment proved historically significant as only the fifth woman appointed to the nation's highest court. Barrett's tenure has already proven consequential, particularly in high-profile cases involving abortion rights, voting rights, and religious liberty. Despite her brief tenure, she has become a prominent and influential figure in American jurisprudence. Her academic background and thoughtful judicial opinions have made her one of the most closely watched justices on the contemporary Supreme Court.
