Amado Carrillo Fuentes
Drug trafficker, Juárez Cartel leader
Amado Carrillo Fuentes (1956–1997) was a Mexican drug lord who rose to prominence as the leader of the Juárez Cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in North America during the 1990s. Born in Sinaloa, Mexico, he inherited a drug trafficking operation from his uncle and rapidly expanded it, ultimately controlling approximately 40% of all cocaine entering the United States. Known as 'El Señor de los Cielos' (The Lord of the Skies) for his extensive use of aircraft to transport drugs, Carrillo revolutionized cocaine smuggling methods and became extraordinarily wealthy and influential. His organization was responsible for unprecedented violence and corruption across Mexico and the border regions. Carrillo maintained a relatively low public profile compared to other infamous drug lords, preferring to operate through intermediaries. He died in 1997 under controversial circumstances following plastic surgery in Mexico City. His legacy remains significant in discussions of organized crime, drug trafficking history, and the evolution of narco-violence in Mexico.
