Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (July 22, 1898 – November 11, 1976) was an American sculptor and artist celebrated for his innovative kinetic sculptures and contributions to abstract art. Born in Pennsylvania to a family of artists, Calder initially pursued mechanical engineering before transitioning to art, studying at the Art Students League in New York. In the 1930s, he revolutionized sculpture by inventing the mobile—delicately balanced, hanging structures that moved with air currents—and the stabile, stationary abstract forms.
