Agostino Carracci

Agostino Carracci (1557–1602) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker, and art theorist who played a crucial role in the artistic revolution of late Renaissance Italy. Born in Bologna, he was the younger brother of Annibale Carracci and cousin of Lodovico Carracci, forming one of art history's most significant family collectives. The Carracci family founded an influential academy that rejected Mannerism in favor of a more naturalistic approach drawing from classical antiquity and the High Renaissance masters. Agostino excelled particularly in printmaking and engraving, creating works of remarkable technical skill and emotional depth. He was instrumental in establishing the Baroque style that would dominate European art for the next century. His engravings were widely distributed, making him one of the most influential printmakers of his era. Though his career was shorter than his brother's due to his death at 45, his contributions to both painting and the theory of art remain foundational to Renaissance and Baroque studies.
