Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

Biography

Adolfo Nicolás Pachón (born January 29, 1936) is a Spanish Jesuit priest and theologian who served as the 30th Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) from 2008 to 2016. Born in Villamuriel de Cerrato, Spain, Nicolás entered the Jesuit order in 1953 and was ordained a priest in 1967. Before his election as Superior General, he spent decades in pastoral and academic work, including significant time in Asia where he developed expertise in interfaith dialogue and inculturation of Christianity in non-Western contexts. As Superior General, he led approximately 17,000 Jesuits worldwide, overseeing the order's educational, missionary, and pastoral missions across 112 countries. He emphasized Jesuit engagement with social justice, environmental concerns, and dialogue with modern secular culture. Nicolás was known for his intellectual rigor, linguistic abilities (fluent in multiple languages), and efforts to maintain the Jesuit charism of service to faith and justice. He stepped down in 2016 at age 80, and was succeeded by Arturo Sosa.
