Adlai Stevenson I
23rd Vice President of the United States
Adlai Ewing Stevenson I (October 23, 1835 – June 14, 1914) was an American politician and statesman who served as the 23rd Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. Born in Kentucky and raised in Illinois, Stevenson built a political career rooted in Democratic Party principles and Midwestern values. Before his vice presidency, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives and held various appointed positions. His tenure as Vice President occurred during a period of significant economic and social change, including the Panic of 1893. Stevenson was known for his moderate political views and his ability to bridge regional differences within the Democratic Party. After leaving office, he remained active in politics and continued to influence Illinois politics. His legacy extends through his family—his grandson, Adlai Stevenson II, also became a prominent politician and twice Democratic presidential nominee. The Stevenson name became synonymous with Democratic political leadership and public service, particularly in Illinois.
