Adelina Patti

Adelina Juana María Patti (February 19, 1843 – September 3, 1919) was an Italian-Spanish opera singer who is widely considered one of the greatest sopranos of the 19th century. Born in Madrid to an Italian family of musicians, she demonstrated prodigious talent from childhood and made her operatic debut in New York in 1859 at age sixteen. Patti's career spanned more than fifty years, during which she became an international superstar, performing at major opera houses across Europe and America, including Covent Garden in London, where she was a particular favorite. Known for her exceptional vocal range, technical brilliance, and dramatic interpretability, she performed lead roles in numerous operas and was especially celebrated for her interpretations of works by Verdi and Donizetti. Patti was one of the first recording artists, making some of the earliest operatic recordings that preserved her voice for posterity. Her immense popularity made her one of the wealthiest entertainers of her time, and she commanded unprecedented fees for her performances. Despite her retirement and subsequent attempts at comeback, Patti's reputation remained stellar. She became a cultural icon of the Victorian era and a symbol of operatic excellence, with her influence felt in vocal performance standards for generations.
