Adda Rehan

Ada Clare Crehan (1857–1916), professionally known as Adda Rehan, was an American actress who became one of the most prominent theatrical figures of the late 19th century. Born in Limerick, Ireland, and raised in Philadelphia, she began her stage career in the 1870s and quickly rose to prominence for her brilliant interpretations of Shakespearean heroines, particularly in comedies like "Much Ado About Nothing" and "The Taming of the Shrew." She was a frequent performer at Augustin Daly's Theatre, one of America's premier theatrical institutions, and her partnership with actor John Drew became legendary among theater historians. Rehan's distinctive contralto voice, expressive eyes, and ability to blend comedy with emotional depth made her a favorite with both critics and audiences. She toured extensively throughout America and Europe, becoming an ambassador for American theater during a period when American stage performances were often considered inferior to their European counterparts.
