Abby Wambach (June 2, 1980 – present) is an American retired professional soccer player and current coach widely considered one of the greatest strikers in women's soccer history. Born in Rochester, New York, Wambach played college soccer at the University of Florida, where she won the NCAA Championship in 2000. She made her U.S. Women's National Team debut in 2001 and went on to earn 256 caps, scoring 184 goals—a long-standing international record until surpassed in 2022. She was a key member of the U.S. Women's Soccer teams that won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2019, and Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2012. Known for her powerful headers, tactical intelligence, and leadership, Wambach was a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year and multiple-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. After retiring in 2015, she became an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality in sports.
